In December 2023, we came back to Chiasso. For two days, we invited the inhabitants to meet, to discuss about hospitality, to build a pavilion, to walk with a parade through the city, to play, to eat. This is how we imagine the Fabbrica di Ospitalità.

Once a guesthouse, it was converted after the Covid-19 crisis to house people awaiting repatriation due to the negative response to their asylum applications. It can accommodate a maximum of 30 people. The building is right next to a graphite factory, which is considered a trouble spot for the surrounding inhabitants because of the bad air pollution it causes.

Formerly a Special Health Facility, since 2015 it has been used to house people who had received negative asylum request. Some inhabitants lived for 6 years under the ground. It is now under transformation. The project is to build new additional spaces above ground to host people with temporary permits.

It was built in the 1950s as a warehouse for the Chiasso station. In 2016 it was converted into a temporary asylum center that can accommodate up to 300 people mostly single adults and some families going through the first phase of the asylum procedure.

The structure hosts minors without parents. For each of them, a mentor for support is appointed to accompany him/her throughout the asylum procedure. In terms of rooms, there are two different categories of accommodation: on the upper floors, the facility hosts minors, offering single and double rooms with shared kitchens and bathrooms on the first floor; on the second level, private one-bedroom flats can be found.

Officially Reception Center (CDA- centro di accoglienza) of Lampedusa maintained by the Italian government. The reception center's capacity of 400 people has been greatly exceeded by numerous people arriving on boats. Immigrants stay around 2-3 days while waiting to be transferred by the Italian government to reception centres in mainland Italy.
